How we make it happen
2009 PEOPLES' TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM
Every 3rd Saturday, SPAN gives our community members free rides, reminding everyone this economic recession has always been here for us and only we can help each other keep on survivin' it! This is just one of the many ways our community already takes care of each other. We want to hear how you help each other out; let's make it a community-wide thing together. We may be short on money, but together we are not short on heart!

2007-2009 CITY REZONING SUNSET PARK
We believe Sunset Park is being overdeveloped -- not only are community needs not being met, they are being ignored, trampled, and worsened. Instead of condo hi-rises, we want low-income housing. Instead of "affordable" housing that is inaffordable for the majority of the community, we want housing for the homeless. Instead of waterfront development and powerplants, we want more greenspace and playgrounds. Instead of the false "protection" of being upzoned, we want the real protection of being downzoned like Bay Ridge was protected!
2006 STOPPING CONDO CONSTRUCTION; SPAN IS BORN
When a proposed 12-story building on 42nd Street threatened to destroy the quality of life and historic low-rise nature of Sunset Park, a group of homeowners, tenants and activists organized a historic effort to stop it--they called themselves the Sunset Park Alliance of Neighbors (SPAN). After several well-attended community meetings, protests, calls and letters to elected officials, a petition drive, community board meetings and press conferences, the developer agreed to cut the building in half!
